Important
Bold reference numbers in this section identify parts not shown in the figures alongside the text, but which can be found in the exploded view diagram.
Rear suspension system
The rear suspension system uses a hydraulic mono-shock absorber (2) with rebound and spring preload adjustment.
The shock absorber is pivot-mounted to the swingarm at the lower end and to the rear subframe frame at the upper end. This system gives the motorcycle excellent stability.
To adjust the MTS 1200 ABS rear shock absorber refer to Sect. 4 - 3, Rear shock absorber adjustment (MTS 1200 ABS), and for MTS 1200S ABS refer to Sect. 6 - 5, Instrument panel system (DASHBOARD).
Removal of the rear shock absorber
For 1200 ABS model undo the screws (7) to remove the preload adjusting knob (A).
For 1200 S ABS model remove the rider seat (Sect. 5 - 3, Removal of the seat).
Disconnect the connector (B) of the shock absorber expansion reservoir (C) from the main wiring.
Undo the fixing screws (9) of the bracket (8) and remove the expansion reservoir (C) of its seat.
Remove the clamp (D) to release the rubber gaiter and disconnect the connectors (E) and (F) of the rear shock absorber.
To remove the rear shock absorber from the vehicle, undo the upper (1) and lower (4) screws.
Overhauling the rear shock absorber
Important
For any problem on the shock absorber operation refer to an Öhlins (for MTS 1200S ABS) or to a SACHS (for MTS 1200 ABS) authorized centre.
Refitting the rear suspension
Lubricate the threads and undersides of the heads of the upper (1) and lower screws (4) with the recommended grease.
Insert the upper part of the shock absorber in the rear subframe tightening the screw (1) and the lower end of the shock absorber in the swingarm tightening the screw (4).
Tighten the screws (1) and (4) to a torque of 42 Nm ± 5% (Sect. 3 - 3, Frame torque settings).
For the 1200 ABS model refit bracket (5), if previously removed, orienting it as shown in the figure, in the indicated area of the LH half sub-frame by starting the screws (6).
Tighten the screws (6) to a torque of 10 Nm ± 10% (Sect. 3 - 3, Frame torque settings).
For the 1200 ABS model place knob (A) that adjusts the preload on the supporting bracket by tightening the screws (7) to a torque of 10 Nm ± 10% (Sect. 3 - 3, Frame torque settings).
For 1200 S ABS model position the bracket (8) on the expansion reservoir (C).
Tighten the fixing screws (9) of bracket (8) to the torque of 10 Nm ± 10% (Sect. 3 - 3, Frame torque settings).
Connect the connector (B) of the shock absorber expansion reservoir (C) to the main wiring.
Refit the rider seat Sect. 5 - 3, Refitting the seat.
Connect connectors (E) and (F) of the rear shock absorber, refit the rubber gaiter and tighten it with clamp (D).
